New Russia Sedge Meadow South

New Russia Sedge Meadow South is a large area dammed by a highway embankment and, higher up, by beavers. The beaver pond is open water. The large pond formed by the highway embankment has filled in and is now an extensive rich fen with a large number of sedge species. There are areas of meadowsweet and alder shrub. Between the sedge fen and the beaver pond are areas of mostly closed wet woodland with a moderately well developed shrub layer.
